Paying a Japanese exporter in crypto
A few exporters accept crypto (see the directory). Crypto can be faster than wire, but it is irreversible.
Before you pay
- Verify the business. Japanese used-car dealers need a 古物商許可 (secondhand-dealer license). Ask for the number, address and phone.
- Written invoice with chassis number, auction sheet, FOB/CIF price, coin, network and wallet address.
- Confirm the wallet on a second channel (phone/video). Invoice-swap scams are common.
- Avoid crypto-only sellers. Legitimate exporters also take bank wire.
- Never share seed phrases or connect a wallet to unknown sites.
Sending
- Match the network exactly (USDT on Tron ≠ Ethereum).
- Send a small test first, then the balance.
- Prefer a stablecoin if the price is in USD/JPY.
- Save the TX hash next to the invoice.
- Stage payments: deposit, then balance after export docs.
After
- Verify the bill of lading with the shipping line.
- IRS treats crypto as property; spending it can be a taxable disposal.
- Declare the true transaction value to Customs.
